Nether Portal Calculator

Calculate exact Nether portal coordinates for linking portals between the Overworld and Nether dimensions.

In Minecraft, the Nether dimension is 8x smaller than the Overworld. Every 1 block traveled in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. Use this calculator to find the exact coordinates for linking your portals!

Overworld

Input

Nether

The Formula

Overworld → Nether

Nether X = Overworld X ÷ 8
Nether Z = Overworld Z ÷ 8

Nether → Overworld

Overworld X = Nether X × 8
Overworld Z = Nether Z × 8

Note: The Y coordinate (height) does not change between dimensions. Build your Nether portal at a similar Y level for best results.

Portal Linking Tips

  • 1.Build your Overworld portal first and note its exact coordinates (press F3).
  • 2.Calculate the Nether coordinates using this tool.
  • 3.In the Nether, travel to those exact coordinates and build your portal there.
  • 4.Both portals will now link correctly! Going through one will always take you to the other.
  • 5.Keep the Y coordinate similar (within ±128 blocks) to avoid portal linking issues.

Fast Travel

Use the Nether for fast travel! 1 block in the Nether = 8 blocks in the Overworld, making long trips much shorter.

Precise Linking

Build portals at the exact calculated coordinates to ensure they link correctly every time.

Nether Hub

Plan an efficient Nether hub network by calculating coordinates for multiple destination portals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my portals link?

Portals may not link if they're too far apart or if there's another portal closer. Build at the exact calculated coordinates for reliable linking.

Does the Y coordinate matter?

Yes! While the conversion only affects X and Z, portals link to the nearest valid location. Build at a similar Y level to avoid issues.

How does Nether travel work?

Every block you walk in the Nether equals 8 blocks in the Overworld. This makes the Nether perfect for building fast travel networks.

What about the End dimension?

The End doesn't have coordinate scaling like the Nether. You can only enter the End through the stronghold portal and exit via the dragon portal or End gateways.
