Air Reduced:Yes

Generates in blobs, reduced when exposed to air

Copper

Best: Y=48

Y Range:-16 to 112
Fortune:Yes

Extra common in Dripstone Caves biome

Iron

Best: Y=16 / 232

Y Range:-64 to 320

More common in Badlands (mesa) biome at higher Y levels

Lapis Lazuli

Best: Y=0

Y Range:-64 to 64
Fortune:Yes

Best around Y=0, rarely exposed to air

Y Range:-64 to 16
Fortune:Yes
Air Reduced:Yes

Best at Y=-59, reduced near air (mine in solid stone)

Emerald

Best: Y=232

ONLY in Mountain biomes, single block veins

Mining Tips for 1.21+

Diamond Mining

  • • Best level: Y=-59 (above bedrock)
  • • Branch mine in straight lines at Y=-59
  • • Avoid mining near caves (air exposure reduces spawns)
  • • Use Fortune III pickaxe for 2.2x average yield
  • • Deepslate is slower to mine, bring Efficiency V

Iron Mining

  • • Best levels: Y=16 (common) or Y=232 (large veins)
  • • Mountain peaks have massive iron veins
  • • Fortune does NOT work on iron ore
  • • Silk Touch + blast furnace for efficiency
  • • Iron golem farms are more efficient

Ancient Debris

  • • Best level: Y=15 in the Nether
  • • Bed/TNT mining is most efficient
  • • Only 1-4 spawn per chunk (very rare)
  • • Blast resistant - won't be destroyed by explosions
  • • Fortune does NOT increase drops

General Tips

  • • Press F3 to see your Y coordinate
  • • Bring water bucket for lava at low levels
  • • Fire Resistance potions help in the Nether
  • • Night Vision helps in dark caves
  • • Consider Mending on your tools

How to Use the Minecraft Ore Distribution Chart

This ore distribution chart shows exactly where every ore generates in Minecraft 1.21+ (post-Caves and Cliffs update). The new world generation completely changed how ores spawn, with worlds now extending from Y=-64 to Y=320. Use this tool to find the perfect mining level for any resource.

Step 1: Choose Your Dimension

Toggle between Overworld and Nether to view ores specific to each dimension. The Overworld contains coal, copper, iron, gold, lapis lazuli, redstone, diamond, and emerald. The Nether contains ancient debris, nether gold ore, and nether quartz.

Step 2: Set Your Mining Level

Use the Y-level slider or click the quick-select buttons to see which ores are available at any given height. The chart shows ore intensity at each level, with brighter colors indicating higher spawn rates. For diamond mining, Y=-59 is the sweet spot, just above the bedrock layer.

Step 3: Review Ore Details

Click on any ore card to highlight its distribution in the chart. Each card shows the Y range, best Y-level, whether Fortune works on it, and if the ore has reduced air exposure (meaning it generates less near caves and open air). Ores with air exposure reduction, like diamonds, are best mined via branch mining in solid stone rather than caving.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Y-level for diamonds in Minecraft 1.21?

The best Y-level for diamonds is Y=-59, just one block above the bedrock layer. Diamonds use a triangular distribution that peaks at the bottom of the world. Mining at Y=-59 gives you the highest diamond density while avoiding bedrock. Use branch mining in straight lines for best results.

Why do I find fewer diamonds in caves?

Since the Caves and Cliffs update, diamonds (and several other ores) have reduced air exposure. This means ore veins that would generate next to air blocks (caves, ravines) are removed. Branch mining through solid deepslate at Y=-59 yields significantly more diamonds than cave exploration.

Does Fortune work on all ores?

Fortune works on coal, copper, diamond, emerald, gold ore (Nether only), lapis lazuli, nether quartz, and redstone. It does NOT work on iron ore or ancient debris. For iron and ancient debris, use Silk Touch and smelt the blocks instead.

Where do I find ancient debris for Netherite?

Ancient debris spawns in the Nether between Y=8 and Y=119, with the highest concentration at Y=15. Only 1-4 pieces generate per chunk, making it extremely rare. Bed or TNT mining at Y=15 is the most efficient method since ancient debris is blast resistant.
