How Minecraft XP Works
Minecraft XP Formula
Minecraft uses a non-linear experience system where higher levels require progressively more XP:
- Levels 0-16: XP = L² + 6L
- Levels 17-31: XP = 2.5L² - 40.5L + 360
- Levels 32+: XP = 4.5L² - 162.5L + 2220
Quick XP Tips
- Enchanting at level 30 costs only 1-3 levels
- Anvil repair costs increase with each use
- XP orbs merge when close together
- Death drops a maximum of 100 XP points (7 levels)
- Mending repairs 2 durability per 1 XP point

Best XP Sources in Minecraft
Experience points (XP) in Minecraft are collected as green orbs that float toward you. Different activities give different amounts of XP. Here are the most efficient ways to gain experience:
Mob XP Sources
- Ender Dragon: 12,000 XP (first kill)
- Wither: 50 XP per kill
- Blaze: 10 XP per kill
- Enderman: 5 XP per kill
- Most hostile mobs: 5 XP per kill
- Baby mobs: No XP (except baby zombies)
Non-Combat XP
- Trading with villagers: 3-6 XP per trade
- Mining ores: 1-7 XP (varies by ore)
- Smelting: 0.1-1 XP per item
- Fishing: 1-6 XP per catch
- Breeding animals: 1-7 XP per breeding
- Bottle o' Enchanting: 3-11 XP each
XP and Enchanting
The enchanting table is the primary reason players farm XP. Understanding how levels affect enchanting helps you farm efficiently:
- Level 30 enchanting gives the best enchantments. The cost is 3 lapis lazuli and 1-3 levels, but you need level 30 to access the top slot.
- Reaching level 30 from 0 requires 1,395 XP. After enchanting, you'll drop to level 27-29, needing only 94-270 XP to return to 30.
- Bookshelves matter: You need 15 bookshelves around your enchanting table to unlock level 30 enchantments.
- Anvil combining uses levels based on enchantment complexity. Combining two max-enchanted items can cost 30+ levels.

About This Minecraft XP Calculator
This free Minecraft XP calculator helps you calculate experience points for any level in Minecraft. Whether you're preparing for enchanting, planning an XP farm, or calculating mending repairs, our calculator uses the official Minecraft experience formulas to give you accurate results.
The experience system in Minecraft is essential for enchanting items, repairing tools with mending, and using the anvil. Unlike many games, Minecraft's XP requirements scale non-linearly, meaning higher levels require significantly more experience points. For example, reaching level 30 requires 1,395 XP, but reaching level 50 requires 5,345 XP - almost 4 times more.
Our calculator supports four modes: Level to XP conversion, XP to Level conversion, Level Range calculation for finding XP between two levels, and a Mending calculator to determine how much XP you need to fully repair an item. The XP sources table shows exactly how many mobs, ores, or other sources you need to reach your target.
