How to Use the Minecraft MOTD Generator
The MOTD (Message of the Day) is the description text displayed beneath your server name in the Minecraft multiplayer server list. A well-crafted MOTD with colors and formatting helps your server stand out and attract players. This tool lets you design your MOTD visually and export it in the correct format.
Step 1: Type Your Message
Enter text for Line 1 and Line 2 of your MOTD. Minecraft MOTDs support exactly two lines of text. Click on a line to select it, then click color or formatting buttons to insert codes at the cursor position. Use & followed by a color code like &a for green or &c for red.
Step 2: Add Colors and Formatting
Click the color palette to insert color codes or use the formatting buttons for bold (&l), italic (&o), underline (&n), and strikethrough (&m). The live preview updates in real-time showing exactly how your MOTD will appear in the server list.
Step 3: Copy and Apply
Copy the server.properties output format and paste it directly into your server.properties file, replacing the existing motd= line. Restart your server for the changes to take effect. For plugins that support & codes directly, use the plain text format instead.

What is a MOTD?
MOTD stands for "Message of the Day". It's the description that appears below your server name in the Minecraft server list.
How do I use the MOTD?
Copy the server.properties output and paste it into your server.properties file, replacing the existing motd= line.
Why use & instead of §?
The server.properties file requires escaped unicode (\u00A7). Many plugins accept & as a shorthand that gets converted automatically.
Can I use HEX colors?
Standard MOTDs only support the 16 built-in colors. For HEX gradients, try our Gradient Generator.
