Building Tips
- - Build from the bottom up, layer by layer for accuracy
- - Use scaffolding or water elevator for tall builds
- - Consider viewing distance when choosing size (larger = better from far)
- - Wool is easiest to gather, concrete has more vibrant colors
- - For map art, build on Y=0 for best lighting consistency

How to Make Pixel Art in Minecraft
What Is Minecraft Pixel Art?
Minecraft pixel art is the practice of recreating images, logos, characters, and artwork using Minecraft blocks as pixels. Each block represents one pixel in the final image, and by choosing blocks with colors that closely match the original image, you can recreate nearly any picture in-game.
Pixel art builds are popular on multiplayer servers, creative worlds, and as decorative elements in survival bases. They range from small 16x16 sprites to massive 256-block murals visible from hundreds of blocks away.
How the Converter Works
Our pixel art generator scales your image down to the target width, then analyzes each pixel to find the Minecraft block with the closest matching color. It uses a weighted color distance algorithm that accounts for how the human eye perceives color differences, producing more accurate results than simple RGB matching.
The optional Floyd-Steinberg dithering spreads color error to neighboring pixels, creating smoother gradients and better detail in areas where no single block color is a perfect match.
Choosing the Right Palette
The block palette you choose affects both the accuracy of your pixel art and how easy it is to gather materials. Concrete offers the most vibrant, saturated colors. Wool is the easiest to farm in bulk using automated sheep farms. Terracotta provides earthy, muted tones ideal for landscapes and portraits.
Use the "All Blocks" palette for maximum color accuracy, or the "Survival Friendly" palette if you need blocks that are easy to obtain without creative mode.
Tips for Better Results
For the best pixel art, start with high-contrast images that have clear outlines. Simple logos, game sprites, and cartoon characters convert well. Photographs with subtle gradients work better at larger sizes (128+) with dithering enabled.
- - Use 32-64 blocks wide for small decorations
- - Use 128-256 blocks wide for detailed artwork
- - Enable dithering for photographs and gradients
- - Disable dithering for logos and pixel art sprites
- - Build vertically (walls) or flat (map art) depending on use
Building Pixel Art in Survival Mode
In survival mode, plan your resource gathering using the material list. Sort blocks by quantity needed and farm the most-used colors first. Wool farms with automatic shearing are the fastest way to get colored blocks. For concrete, you'll need sand, gravel, and dye in bulk.
Use scaffolding to reach high areas and build from bottom to top, working in horizontal rows. The material list shows exact stack counts to help you fill your inventory efficiently before each building session.
Map Art vs. Wall Art
Minecraft pixel art can be built as wall art (vertical, viewed directly) or as map art (flat on the ground, viewed through a filled map item). Map art is 128x128 blocks per map and can be placed in item frames to create custom paintings and murals in your base.
For map art, build at Y=0 on a flat surface for consistent lighting. Set your converter width to 128 to match the map resolution exactly. Multiple maps can be arranged in a grid for larger images.
